What Hoa Lu Old Town actually is

Hoa Lu Old Town, or Phố cổ Hoa Lư, is a recreated cultural and commercial area beside Kỳ Lân Lake. Its architecture refers to older Đại Việt culture, while its visitor setting includes craft and shopping activity. Think of it as an interpretation of the past in a lakeside urban setting. The historic Đinh and Lê temples belong to a separate destination in Tây Hoa Lư.

This distinction matters when choosing accommodation, transport or an excursion. A driver given only the name Hoa Lu may need a more precise destination. Use Phố cổ Hoa Lư and Kỳ Lân Lake for the recreated quarter; use the ancient capital and the temple names for the historic site. The arrival guide explains the place-name issue before you arrange the journey.

The lake quarter and the royal temples

The ancient capital concerns the court of Đại Cồ Việt, the Đinh and Early Lê rulers and the later temples that commemorate them. The lake quarter instead offers a recreated cultural setting at another location. Visiting both can make sense as separate parts of a trip, provided you keep an onward journey between them in the plan. Choose the historic visit for royal history and the quarter for its own lakeside setting.

The history page explains the capital established in 968 and the move to Thăng Long in 1010. The temple page describes the shrines. Read those pages when deciding whether a sightseeing excursion matches your interests. The general excursion selection concerns the ancient capital and its surrounding routes, with a separate purpose from an evening visit to Phố cổ.

Free access and separate Kỳ Lân boat tariffs

The official visitor-price list dated 27 February 2026 gives free access to Phố cổ. A Kỳ Lân Lake boat is priced separately. For the standard boat, it lists 100,000 VND for adults and children above 1.29 metres, and 80,000 VND for children below 1.29 metres. The VIP category is 150,000 VND for adults and children above that height, and 100,000 VND for children below it.

Choose between simply visiting the quarter and adding a lake activity. For a child exactly 1.29 metres tall, ask which tariff applies when purchasing. Discuss the practical arrangements for your party at the same time, including the departure you intend to take. Keep the lake payment separate from any ancient-capital admission in your budget; they are purchases for different experiences at different places.

Hoa Lu at night and the Tết account

A report published on 20 February 2026 describes the quarter on the evening of the third day of Tết. It records visitors, food and souvenir stalls, street arts and illuminated streets. That account shows the kind of evening atmosphere documented for that occasion. It is a useful picture of a festive visit, while your own date should be planned around the activities actually taking place.

If stalls and evening lighting are your main interests, check the arrangements for the date you intend to go. Leave yourself a choice between walking in the quarter, eating and taking a lake boat, rather than making the whole evening depend on one presumed show or final departure. A cash reserve in Vietnamese đồng is useful for small purchases. Agree a return plan before staying out later than originally intended.

Where to stay and how to plan the visit

A city or Kỳ Lân Lake base serves a different purpose from accommodation around Trường Yên and the historic temples. Choose the area according to the part of the trip you want nearby. The accommodation-area guide helps compare those locations without relying on a hotel name that simply contains Hoa Lu. Use the exact accommodation address when arranging a pickup or return.

Administrative changes add another reason for precision. Hoa Lư city began on 1 January 2025, followed by new ward administrations on 1 July 2025. The temple area is in Tây Hoa Lư; older city and quarter descriptions may use earlier names. A saved destination pin together with the full place name is a practical way to communicate which visit you intend.

Plan the lake quarter as a stop in its own right. Start with whether you want a walk, food purchases or a boat, then fit the onward journey around that choice. The free access tariff is useful for that decision, while the separate boat categories help keep optional spending visible. For a different day focused on royal history, use the monument-fee guide and choose transport to the ancient capital.
