Things to do in Hoa Lu
Hoa Lu was the capital of Đại Cồ Việt from 968, when Đinh Bộ Lĩnh became emperor. Today the historical site combines royal memorial temples, a limestone setting and traces of former fortifications. A visit makes more sense when the capital's history and the later buildings are understood together. Begin with the Dinh and Le temples, then decide whether cycling or a neighbouring boat route belongs in the same day.
The ancient capital is in Tây Hoa Lư, in the area formerly addressed as Trường Yên. Administrative changes created a city named Hoa Lư in January 2025, followed by new local wards operating from July 2025. These names can appear in accommodation and transport addresses. Use the historical site's full name when arranging a journey, rather than relying on Hoa Lu alone.

Day trips from Hanoi or a local departure
A day trip to the ancient capital can combine a temple visit with transport, lunch and other countryside stops. The itinerary offering a choice between Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh includes cycling with the Hoa Lu option. Select that option for a visit to the capital. Another Hanoi departure includes an English-speaking guide, lunch, entrances and a short bicycle outing, with the vehicle determined by the booked option.
For visitors already staying locally, the eight-hour outing with return transport, a guide and water provides a different starting point. Its neighbouring attraction fees and lunch cost extra. Compare the included services rather than treating every low starting price as the same package. An alternative meeting at Hanoi Opera House includes Hoa Lu admission, bicycle use and a Vietnamese buffet lunch; choose it for those listed services.
Royal temples and the Ma Yen landscape
The temples commemorate Đinh Tiên Hoàng and Lê Đại Hành. Their present buildings are later places of remembrance, rather than unchanged palaces from the capital's founding period. At the Dinh temple, gateways, courtyards and the stone Long Sàng are part of the architectural interest. The Le temple honours Lê Đại Hành, Dương Vân Nga and Lê Long Đĩnh in its inner sanctuary.
Mã Yên stands before the Dinh temple, with a memorial associated with King Dinh on the saddle-shaped hill. The Le tomb is south of the hill at its foot. Treat the hill as a separate decision within the visit and follow local access instructions. For the historical sequence from the Dinh and Early Le dynasties to the move to Thang Long in 1010, read the capital history.

Bicycles and private routes
The cycling options range from an e-bike outing to a short countryside stage within a vehicle-based day. The distinction matters if cycling is the main reason for visiting. A local e-bike programme includes a guide and drinking water, while a seven-hour combination includes a 30-minute bicycle activity. Choose the amount of riding that suits the day rather than assuming every tour is a long ride.
A private itinerary is useful when the departure area and the combination of temples, bicycle riding and water landscapes need to match. Some begin in Hanoi and others collect visitors locally. A private car, a private guide and included admission are separate services in the various options, so compare their scope alongside the starting price.
Old Town is a separate evening destination
Phố cổ Hoa Lư stands by Kỳ Lân Lake at a different location from the royal temples. It is a recreated cultural and commercial quarter drawing on historic architecture. The tourism tariff dated 27 February 2026 lists free access to the quarter, with lake boating charged separately. The Old Town guide explains that distinction in detail.
A report dated 20 February 2026 described illuminated streets, food and souvenir stalls and street performances during Tết. Use that as a picture of that occasion when planning an evening, and check the programme for your own date. When choosing where to stay, separate the lake and city area from the historical temple area.
Trang An as a boat combination Trang An
Hoa Lu belongs to the Trang An Landscape Complex, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. A combination can connect the capital's cultural story with limestone valleys and boat passages. For a boat day, check current operation and weather before departure: an announcement dated 23 August 2026 temporarily suspended Trang An services until further notice.
Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and Mua combinations Ninh Binh and Tam Coc
These neighbouring stops belong to a wider countryside itinerary. Keep the temple visit as its own part of the day, with separate travel and activities around it. The transport guide helps distinguish a direct journey to the historical entrance from arrival in the city; the entrance fee guide separates monument tariffs from tour services.
